Working with Conventions

All public events, even those run by fans, must now conform to current legislation on access for people with disabilities, as outlined in the Disability Discrimination Act (1995).

Convention committees now have a 'duty of care' to make their event as accessible as possible. However, this should not cause panic or worry for those involved.

Electrical Eggs UK has produced a Handbook, with recommendations for 'Best Practice', that provides practical information and advice to convention committees. We also provide immediate support, inviting as much contact with Eggs UK either by telephone or email. No matter how trivial a matter may seem, for some fans it may be very important and making the right choice on access provision is paramount if everyone is to enjoy himself or herself!

At this time, we have very few local area representatives: volunteers who know our Service and are based in the city where an event is taking place, who may be able to work at a convention to take some of the strain off the committee. If we can provide this, we will pay our volunteer's membership (unless it is gifted by the convention, which saves on our own financial resources).

Full administrative support is provided to conventions that adopt our Access Service guidelines. This includes the provision of leaflets, forms, badges, Access/Alert information of current Eggs UK members and signage. We have commissioned some special artwork, which will be given to conventions to include in all their own publications, so that their membership can see that the event is accredited to use our Access Service.

We no longer charge conventions for the use of our Service, although this used to provide a guaranteed income for the organisation. It was generally felt that all our information & support should be freely available to anyone who enquired about us.

However, it is very important to note that conventions must still formally request permission to use our Service, which will also authorise them to use our logos (which are protected under copyright law) & documentation.
